Shaking Out The Kinks

Posted by – June 3, 2010

shakyfaceWe’ve been using the Fantasia, Fantastic Fest and Toronto After Dark festival deadlines to iterate on progressively better cuts of the movie. I have my fingers double crossed for the Fantastic Fest as I’m on their Arcade section’s advisory board and hope to go anyway. Any fest that requires the shaky face technique for their ID badges I gotta check out!

We’re at the point where we’re starting to show this cut to folks who haven’t read the script to get feedback.

We’re getting closer to the finish line but we still need FX and post sound help, however, so please get in touch if you have any leads on that!

Visit Toronto In 2040

Sanford Kong's awesome art
It would be an intriguing tourism brochure to come across on the subway, no? Perhaps leading people to a GwSJ trailer?

Not to say we’re anywhere close to finished, but we’ve started to bat around promotional ideas while Tate makes steady progress on the rough edit. If you have any, please add them below or just email me.

And the weirder the better! The videogame I made starring the Karrento Brothers as a promotional tie-in got profiled on a rather high-traffic site and one person left a comment on my site the other day:

I saw your IF game over at jayisgames.com and had to stop by to say how brilliant it was. Despite the short length, I thought Anton and Toph were great characters. I was disappointed the game ended so quickly because I wanted to learn more about the Karrento brothers and the future they inhabited.
Then I came to your site and noticed the characters were from an actual movie! GwSJ sounds awesome! Main-stream film is so obsessed with remakes (did we really need another Karate Kid?) and 3-D effects that it will be refreshing to watch something completely original. Can’t wait to see this film when it is distributed.

I’m a big fan of the slow-burn, creative approach to promotion, and it’s feedback like this that make me think we’re on the right track.

Roofed, A Preemptive Spinoff Game

Posted by – February 2, 2010

Because they’re on my mind — Tate’s making steady progress on the rough edit — my new text adventure game features two characters from Ghosts With Shit Jobs, the Karrento Brothers, that you can play now.

You and your brother’s job — scouring the city’s highest spots for a rare building material in the year 2040 — is already hard enough. Now Anton’s gone and gotten you trapped on a rooftop. Your acrobat bloodline will help you with the deadly heights, and your brain will figure out the genmodded plants — but will you be able to cope with having the most annoying big brother alive?

Play it now.

Babymakers Rough Edit

I just saw Chris’ Babymakers segment at at Tate’s editing suite on Friday, and it’s looking really good! As you can see above with the multiple Jordans, Tate was already able to implement some basic effects. Tate’s said he’ll be able to make some real progress on the rest of it in Jan. Now that we have something to work with I’m starting to look for the following post people:

  • soundtrack composition
  • special effects and titling
  • colour correction
  • audio post and ADR

If you’re looking to let friends know, you can direct them here:

…it gives a little rundown of the story as well. If you’ve already let us know you can help, we’ll be getting in touch soon.

Bigger picture, we’re hoping to get a cut together for the Toronto After Dark 2010 festival submission in mid-May & screen it in the summer. Thoughts? Any other good deadlines people know about?

Check out David Fernandez‘s trailer for his short “Re-Wire” and and Keith Lock‘s for his feature The Ache. These guys were friends of friends who I only just met in person in the last couple weeks, but who very kindly helped us out with finding actors and gear. They’re doing interesting, ambitious work and being totally nice guys as well — a pleasant change from the industry-asshole cliche you hear so much about.

Wrapped! Let’s Party!

Posted by – November 2, 2009

We filmed our final scenes on Friday evening. 21 days of shooting over two months.

Cast and crew — whether you spent an hour on set or many, many more — are invited to the wrap party at Unit Bar, where we filmed one of the scenes (pictured above). It’s at 1198 Queen Street West, and starts at 8pm on Monday, November 9th.

See ya there! Bring your best war stories!

Some New Framegrabs

We’re got 80% of the movie shot, it’s looking really good. See for yourself below!

If looking at them makes you kick yourself that you haven’t gotten more involved, don’t fret — we’re looking for extras for Sunday — a three hour thing, 11-2, where we need office workers of the future! Get in touch if you can help us out.

Pre-Production Hour Log

If you logged your hours in pre-production, please email me the total (and breakdown if you have it, for curiosity’s sake).

If you didn’t, don’t worry about it.

Half Way There!

Posted by – September 17, 2009

We’re about half way through the production phase. Here’s some shots by Erica Belli from the first shoot of the segment I’m directing, which went amazing!

They feature the sign design of Terry Lau, the shirts were made from scratch by Susan Bustos, and the container and grabber was made by Rudi. Thanks a million guys!

Key to the City

So we went back and forth a lot with insurance, whether we should get it or not. In the end, we ponied up the $750 to Unionville Insurance and got $2M in liability and $500k in equipment. That means that all the equipment we’re using is covered for damages, and the city will give us permits to legally shoot in public places.

As you can see from the above permit, they can be pretty broad — this one allows us to shoot anywhere except the downtown core for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the Film and Television Office, they’ve been pretty patient with me and the turnaround is quick.

The nicest thing happened on my shoot on Wednesday — a Parks and Rec truck pulled up, and both Anthony and I assumed they were there to check up on our permit. But no, they were there because they saw we were shooting and wanted to know if we needed the gate unlocked for our vehicles. It was a moot point because we’d all come by transit, but it was a nice thing that instead of checking on us they were there to help us out.

Friday Eyecandy: Hide the Children

Posted by – September 4, 2009

Production began on Sunday so there’s a ton going on but of course, no time to blog about it.

…designed by Nick Pagee for the very first shoot.

…designed by Terry at Beehive Design for my first shoot, next week.

…the spider silk containment unit, created by Rudi (pal of our propsmistress Nancy).

Still looking for:

  • an office floor
  • a limousine
  • a herd of rambunctious children
  • extras to be market sellers and goers
  • extra crew hands
  • willing drivers with cars

Let us know!
